CAIRO, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian teams helped extinguish a fire on a container ship operated by Swiss-headquartered Mediterranean Shipping Company late Tuesday, with no casualties reported, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources said Wednesday.
The ministry said in a statement it received an emergency alert from the marine control room in the Red Sea city of Ras Gharib reporting a fire in the engine room of the container ship, the PUMBA, which was sailing near an offshore oil platform at the time of the incident.
It swiftly coordinated with relevant authorities and dispatched four tugboats from petroleum companies to assist in firefighting and rescue operations, the ministry said.
"The joint efforts resulted in full control of the fire with no casualties, and the vessel was towed to a safe anchorage area, away from operational zones and vital navigation routes," it said.
According to maritime tracking data, the PUMBA is a 294-meter-long container ship sailing under the flag of Liberia. It is currently active in the Red Sea region and operates under Mediterranean Shipping Company, one of the world's largest container shipping lines. Enditem
