KABUL, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan power company Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) has signed agreements with two companies to produce 160 megawatts of electricity from coal in northern Baghlan province, the state-owned power company announced late Monday.
The agreements will facilitate the establishment of coal-based power generation facilities in Baghlan, a region rich in coal reserves, according to the statement.
This initiative marks a significant step toward addressing Afghanistan's chronic power shortages, as the country heavily depends on electricity imports from Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Iran.
The deal came just a day after Afghanistan secured 243 million U.S. dollars in contracts with Uzbek investors for electricity transmission and distribution projects, signaling a concerted effort to bolster the nation's energy infrastructure and reduce reliance on foreign power sources. Enditem
