BEIRUT, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- A Hezbollah member was killed Thursday in an Israeli drone strike on southern Lebanon, according to Lebanese sources.
The Public Health Emergency Operations Center, affiliated with the Ministry of Public Health, said in a statement that the strike targeted a motorcycle in the town of Deir Seryan, Marjayoun district.
A Lebanese army intelligence source told Xinhua that the dead was a Hezbollah member named Salim Salman al-Khatib.
Meanwhile, Lebanon's official National News Agency reported that Israeli forces on Wednesday night launched heavy airstrikes on the al-Housh area, east of the Tyre city, injuring seven people, and fired three ground-to-ground missiles towards the Ras area in the town of Deir al-Zahrani.
A Lebanese security source told Xinhua that it marked the first time Israeli forces had used ground-to-ground missiles on southern Lebanon following the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire.
Since Nov. 27, 2024, a U.S.- and French-brokered ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel has formally been in effect, ending more than a year of cross-border clashes. The agreement stipulated Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon, but the Israeli army has maintained several posts along the border and continues to launch attacks, citing "threats" from Hezbollah.
On Monday, the Israeli army reportedly established a new military post in the border region of southern Lebanon. Enditem
