TEHRAN, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Iran and the three European countries of France, Britain and Germany, collectively known as the E3, have agreed to continue their contacts in the coming days, the Iranian foreign ministry said on Tuesday.
In an interview with state-run IRIB TV, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei elaborated on the outcomes of a meeting earlier in the day between senior diplomats from Iran, the E3 and the European Union in Geneva, Switzerland.
Baghaei said that during the negotiations, Iran "explicitly and clearly" informed the other parties of its demand regarding the removal of sanctions, as well as its nuclear rights.
The Iranian delegation had told the Europeans that they did not have the right to use the snapback mechanism and reinstate international sanctions on Tehran, and had warned them about the consequences in case such a scenario would unfold, he added.
Commenting on the meeting in a post on X, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi said both sides had outlined their respective views on the UN Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2231, which endorses a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers.
He said Iran remains committed to diplomacy and a mutually beneficial diplomatic solution, stressing that it is high time for the E3 and the UNSC to make the "right choice, and give diplomacy time and space."
Over the past months, the E3 have been threatening to trigger the snapback mechanism and reinstate international sanctions on Iran, accusing Tehran of non-compliance with the nuclear agreement.
The snapback clause, part of the nuclear deal formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, allows world powers to reimpose international sanctions if Iran fails to comply with the deal.
Since September last year, Iran has held several rounds of talks with the three European states, mainly focused on Tehran's nuclear issue and the removal of sanctions. Enditem
