BAGHDAD, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani met on Tuesday with Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu to discuss bilateral relations and regional security, amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

Al-Sudani emphasized the importance of international cooperation, particularly from the permanent members of the UN Security Council, to bolster regional stability and end the "unjust war on Gaza," according to a statement from his media office. He said Israel's actions threaten not only the Middle East but also global peace and security.

Shoigu, for his part, reaffirmed Russia's commitment to strengthening ties with Iraq across political, economic, and security sectors, the statement said.

In a separate meeting with Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji, Shoigu discussed joint efforts between the two countries to halt the conflict in Gaza and pursue diplomatic solutions to alleviate the humanitarian crisis affecting Palestinians. Enditem
