S. Korea logs 4.53 bln USD deficit in knowledge service trade in H1

SEOUL, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- South Korea logged 4.53 billion U.S. dollars of deficit in knowledge service trade in the first half of 2025, central bank data showed Wednesday.

It was higher than a deficit of 3.76 billion dollars in the second half of 2024, according to the Bank of Korea (BOK).

The knowledge service includes four areas of intellectual property royalties, information and communication service, cultural and leisure service, and professional and business service.

Trade in the intellectual property royalties and the professional and business service recorded deficits of 2.45 billion dollars and 4.48 billion dollars each in the January-June period.

The information and communication service and the cultural and leisure service generated surpluses of 1.96 billion dollars and 440 million dollars, respectively.

By industry, the information and communication sector posted a surplus of 1.64 billion dollars in the first half, while deficits in the manufacturing sector and the digital intermediary platforms ran to 2.47 billion dollars and 2.20 billion dollars each.

By region, South Korea made a surplus of 3.57 billion dollars in knowledge service trade with Asia in the six-month period, while deficits with North America and Europe amounted to 3.77 billion dollars and 2.18 billion dollars each. Enditem
