KIGALI, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- The 194th UCI Congress officially opened on Thursday in Rwanda's capital Kigali, as the country welcomed 115 members representing UCI national federations.
The congress coincides with Rwanda's hosting of the 2025 UCI Road World Championships, held from September 21 to 28, marking a historic milestone as the first time the event has taken place on the African continent.
Speaking at the opening of the Congress, Rwanda's President Paul Kagame expressed gratitude to riders and fans who had traveled from across the world.
"We are deeply inspired by you, and we will be there every step of the way to cheer you on," he said.
Kagame also emphasized Africa's deep connection to cycling, noting that bicycles have long been a vital mode of transport and livelihood across the continent.
"In Rwanda, significant investments have been made to develop cycling as a sport, including the establishment of three UCI satellite centers earlier this year. These initiatives are helping African riders access training, coaching, and resources previously out of reach," he said.
"Governing bodies of sports have a responsibility to expand access, and we see the UCI leading the way," Kagame added, also stressing that investing in Africa taps into one of the fastest-growing and most youthful regions in the world, with potential in producing elite riders and developing cycling-related industries.
UCI President David Lappartient welcomed the national federation members and praised Rwanda for its role in hosting the World Cycling Championship. "Your dedication and collaboration drive the growth of cycling across every corner of the globe. Together, we are shaping the future of our sport," he said.
The Congress brings together UCI members to review key developments in cycling, vote on important matters shaping the sport's future, and hold elections for the UCI President and Management Committee members. Enditem
