3 killed as portion of building collapses in India's Gujarat

NEW DELHI, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- At least three people were killed and two others rescued alive after a portion of a dilapidated building collapsed Monday in the western Indian state of Gujarat, police said.

The building collapsed in Veraval city of Gir Somnath district, about 456 km southwest of Gandhinagar, the capital city of Gujarat.

Immediately, police, fire and emergency personnel and disaster response force teams were rushed to the spot to carry out rescue efforts and pull out survivors.

Police said two people were rescued alive from the debris and removed to the nearest hospital.

Local media reports quoted residents as saying the building was nearly 80 years old.

The cause of the building collapse was not immediately known. Police have registered a case and ordered an investigation to ascertain the reasons that led to the collapse of the structure. Enditem
