OSLO, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Five people were killed and one seriously injured in a two-car collision late Saturday night on the E8 highway south of Tromso, northern Norway, police confirmed on Monday.

Three of the victims were 18-year-old men from the village of Ramfjord, followed by two others: a man in his 60s and a woman in her 50s, who were residents of Kaldfjord. A woman in her mid-50s survived with serious but stable injuries.

Police said the accident occurred around 11:44 p.m. Saturday (2144 GMT), about 16 km south of Tromso. Preliminary findings suggest the cars collided head-on while traveling in opposite directions on an 80 km/h stretch of the highway.

"This is a tragedy," said Police Chief Anita Hermansen, adding that the police are in close contact with Tromso Municipality to support the relatives of those involved.

Tromso Mayor Gunnar Wilhelmsen told reporters that the municipality convened an emergency meeting on Monday to coordinate follow-up measures.

The Norwegian Accident Investigation Board has sent a team to the site to determine the cause of the crash. Local authorities have activated a crisis response team while Tromso's Arctic Cathedral hosted a light vigil event on Sunday evening for local residents.

The crash is among the most serious traffic accidents in Norway in recent years, and it has renewed attention to safety along the E8 corridor.

Norway recorded 16 road deaths per million inhabitants in 2024, according to the European Transport Safety Council. Enditem
