WASHINGTON, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Thursday that she will not seek re-election next year and will retire from Congress at the end of her current term.
Pelosi, 85, has represented California in Congress since 1987. She served as minority leader of the House of Representatives from 2003 to 2007 and held the speakership twice, from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023.
Pelosi clashed openly with U.S. President Donald Trump on multiple occasions and oversaw two impeachment proceedings against Trump, the first in late 2019 and the second in early 2021.
Trump slammed Pelosi after her retirement announcement, telling Fox News that "she was evil, corrupt, and only focused on bad things for our country." Enditem
