COLOMBO, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka launched a pilot project on Monday to allow passengers to pay bus fares using bank-issued credit and debit cards, in a bid to modernize the country's public transport system.
The card-based payment facility was inaugurated at the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Center and is jointly implemented by the Ministry of Transport and Highways and the Ministry of Digital Economy with the support of selected state and private banks.
The system has been activated on several interprovincial and provincial routes. The launch event was held under the patronage of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Bimal Rathnayake. A health inspection by the National Transport Medical Institute was conducted on bus drivers to ensure none had used narcotic substances.
Speaking at the event, Rathnayake said the Western Province Road Passenger Transport Authority had already begun using the card-payment method on the Borella-Kadawatha route, while the Uva Province authority had implemented the system on the Badulla-Bandarawela, Dambulla-Mahiyanganaya, Moneragala-Bibile and Moneragala-Wellawaya services.
