Belgian soldier dies from injuries in training in Lithuania

VILNIUS, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- A Belgian soldier has died from injuries sustained during live-fire training in Lithuania, the Lithuanian Armed Forces said on Saturday.

"We extend our sincere condolences to the family and colleagues of the fallen soldier and to our close ally Belgium. Lithuania stands firmly with Belgium in the face of this very painful tragedy," Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas said in a statement.

The soldier was injured during training at the Pabrade training area in the Svencionys District and was rushed to a hospital in Vilnius on Friday, but later died from extremely severe multiple injuries, the statement said.

Belgian troops have been regularly deployed in Lithuania since 2017 as part of the Germany-led multinational NATO battalion. Enditem
