ISLAMABAD, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Two children were killed and 16 others injured when a mortar shell exploded at a seminary in Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police sources said on Thursday.
The blast happened at about 2:00 p.m. local time (0900 GMT) in North Waziristan district of the province on Monday, where some students brought in a mortar shell they had found outside the seminary and mistook it for a toy, the sources told Xinhua.
The device detonated while the children were playing with it, killing two on the spot and injuring 16 others, officials said.
The injured students were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment, the sources added.
