BAKU, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent remarks concerning China's Taiwan, along with Japan's accelerating remilitarization agenda, not only contradict international law but also undermine regional security, a Georgian expert has said.
A series of international legal documents clearly establish China's sovereignty over Taiwan, Beka Natsvlishvili, director of the China-Southeast Asia Research Center in Georgia, said in a written interview with Xinhua, asserting that Takaichi's erroneous and provocative remarks clearly contradict international law.
According to the Cairo Declaration of 1943 and the 1945 Potsdam Proclamation, Japan was required to relinquish all territories it had taken from China, including Taiwan. Furthermore, the UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 explicitly recognizes the Government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legal government representing the whole of China.
Takaichi's remarks concerning Taiwan contradict the four key political documents between China and Japan, especially the 1972 Sino-Japanese Joint Statement, he said.
Natsvlishvili noted that eyeing China's growing influence across the region and the globe, Japan, through steps toward remilitarization, seeks to contain China's rising influence in close alliance with the United States.
"The attempt of the current Japanese government to contain China goes hand in hand with rising nationalism in Japan, accompanied by attempts to gain emancipation from the burdens of a past marked by imperialism, war crimes, and atrocities against humanity committed during World War II," he said.
In addition, Japan is accelerating its remilitarization agenda, which includes seeking to revise Article 9 of its Constitution, planning to deploy medium-range missiles on islands near Taiwan, and increasing its defense spending, Natsvlishvili noted.
