ST. PETERSBURG, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- The new diesel-electric submarine Velikiye Luki was delivered to the Russian Navy on Tuesday following a flag-raising ceremony at the Admiralty Shipyards here, RIA Novosti news agency reported.
The ceremony marked the formal transfer of the Project 677 submarine, also known as the Lada-class, to the Russian Navy. Built for the Baltic Fleet, the vessel was constructed at the Admiralty Shipyards, which are part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation.
Lada-class submarines belong to the fourth generation of non-nuclear submarines and are designed to counter enemy submarines and surface ships, protect naval bases and sea lanes, and carry out missile strikes against coastal targets.
The submarines are equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles and feature a low acoustic signature, enabling underwater speeds of more than 20 knots or over 37 km per hour and diving depths exceeding 300 meters. Enditem
