SEOUL, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- A South Korean court on Wednesday issued additional detention warrants for Kim Yong-hyun, former defense minister, and Yeo In-hyung, former head of the Defense Counterintelligence Command, over concerns of evidence destruction, according to Yonhap news agency.
The Seoul Central District Court granted the warrants for Kim and Yeo, who have been detained since last December, as their first-instance detention period was nearing expiration.
Kim was first detained on Dec. 10 last year on charges of playing a key role in the insurrection, triggered by former impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol's botched martial law bid. A separate detention warrant for Kim was granted on June 25 on charges such as obstruction of justice.
By law, the maximum detention period for a first-instance trial is six months, but if a defendant is indicted on other charges, the court can issue additional warrants.
Yeo was first detained on Dec. 14 last year for playing a key role in the insurrection. Enditem
