BERLIN, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- The number of recorded violent attacks against police officers in Germany rose to a record high in 2024, increasing by 0.3 percent year-on-year to 46,367 cases, according to figures released on Monday by the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA).

Official data show that around 87 percent of the incidents involved resistance to law enforcement or direct physical assaults. Acts classified as violence also include threats, coercion and intentional injury.

Nationwide, 106,875 police officers were victims of violent acts last year, representing a 67.2 percent increase compared with 2015. The data also show that 83.1 percent of identified suspects were male, while 34.9 percent did not hold German citizenship.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said violence against police, firefighters and emergency responders had become part of daily operational reality. He announced that, together with Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig, the government would introduce legislation aimed at toughening penalties, expediting judicial procedures and improving protection for emergency personnel.

Germany last tightened criminal laws protecting police and emergency services in 2017, allowing prison sentences of up to five years for physical attacks. However, official figures indicate that such offenses have continued to rise. The governing coalition has pledged further reforms, with detailed proposals expected soon. Enditem
