BEIRUT, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Egypt will help Lebanon ease its chronic electricity shortages through cooperation in natural gas, visiting Egyptian Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi said Monday.
"Egypt attaches great importance to the energy file in Lebanon," Badawi said after meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, according to a statement released by the Lebanese Presidency.
Egypt is ready to "provide all possible support to Lebanon through its expertise" in gas exploration, production and supply for power generation, among others, Badawi said, adding that joint working groups have been formed between ministries of the two countries in this regard.
For his part, Aoun welcomed the move, describing a recently-signed bilateral memorandum on natural gas for electricity as a practical and essential step to help Lebanon increase power production and reduce nationwide rationing, read the statement.
Lebanon has long suffered severe electricity shortages, relying heavily on private generators. The cooperation with Egypt is seen as key to stabilizing the country's energy sector. Enditem
