ISTANBUL -- Nine people, including three police officers and six suspected Islamic State (IS) members, were killed and nine others wounded during an operation targeting IS members in the northwestern Turkish province of Yalova on Monday, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said.

Speaking at a press conference in Ankara, Yerlikaya said simultaneous operations were carried out at 108 separate addresses across 15 provinces as part of a nationwide crackdown against IS over the night. (Türkiye-IS-Operations)

BAGHDAD -- The Iraqi Council of Representatives (parliament) elected Haibet al-Halbousi on Monday as its new speaker, marking a major step in the formation of the new government.

GAZA -- Hamas' armed wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, announced on Monday that its military spokesperson Abu Obeida had been killed during the Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip earlier this year.

CAIRO -- The Arab League (AL), in an extraordinary session at the level of permanent delegates and chaired by the United Arab Emirates on Sunday, condemned Israel's formal recognition of Somaliland as an "independent sovereign state."

In a statement, the AL voiced its full rejection of any arrangements stemming from Israel's "null and void" recognition that aim to facilitate the "forced displacement" of the Palestinian people or to use ports in northern Somalia to establish military bases.
