KUALA LUMPUR, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Efforts to improve public transport in Malaysia have yielded results, with an increase in ridership and fewer recorded disruptions, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said on Wednesday.

Prasarana, the country's major bus and rail owner and operator, saw an 11 percent jump in ridership numbers, while rail service disruptions fell by 56 percent, from 71 incidents in 2024 to 31 last year, Loke said following the launch of Prasarana's performance report.

"Many of these incidents were caused by external factors such as cable theft, fallen tree branches, foreign objects on tracks, and severe weather," Loke said.

Prasarana President and Group Chief Executive Officer Amir Hamdan said that besides improving rail services, the company is also working to modernize its bus fleet, including the acquisition of about 250 electric buses, as well as upgrading bus stations and related infrastructure. Enditem
