BERLIN, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Thursday that a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia is a necessary prerequisite for the deployment of international troops to help secure peace in Ukraine, adding that the world remains "far off" from such a stage.

Such a vision "simply does not work without the consent of Russia," said Merz at a press conference in Seeon, in southern Germany's Bavaria.

Commenting on the recent meeting of the Coalition of the Willing in Paris, where Britain and France expressed readiness to send multinational forces to support Ukraine once a ceasefire is agreed, Merz maintained a more cautious tone.

He said Germany would be willing to deploy troops in Ukraine's neighboring countries as a first step, but stressed that such moves would also depend on a decision from the federal government and a mandate from the German Bundestag, the lower house of parliament. Enditem
