KABUL, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Afghan authorities will launch the construction of a new medical university in eastern Afghanistan's Khost province at a cost of more than 565 million afghanis (about 8.7 million U.S. dollars), the official media Bakhtar news agency reported Friday.

According to the report, the university will be built on a four-acre plot of land. The project includes the establishment of five academic faculties and a fully equipped teaching hospital, which will serve both educational and healthcare purposes.

The university is expected to contribute to the development of higher education in the medical field and improve access to professional medical training in the province. The teaching hospital will also provide practical training opportunities for students while delivering medical services to local residents.

The initiative comes as Afghanistan continues efforts to expand higher education capacity, particularly in specialized disciplines such as medicine, amid growing demand for qualified healthcare professionals across the country. Enditem
