SEOUL, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's National Assembly on Friday passed a new comprehensive special prosecutor bill to continue investigations into former President Yoon Suk-yeol and his wife, Kim Keon-hee, according to Yonhap News Agency.
The bill was approved at a plenary session of the National Assembly after being pushed forward by the ruling Democratic Party of Korea. The bill aims to address unresolved issues and newly raised suspicions left inadequately examined by three previous special prosecutor teams whose investigations have concluded.
The bill focuses on a comprehensive probe into allegations of insurrection and collusion with external forces related to the Dec. 3 emergency martial law incident in 2024, as well as various suspicions surrounding election interference and abuse of power involving the former presidential couple.
The bill was submitted to the National Assembly for deliberation on Thursday. However, the People Power Party, the country's main conservative opposition party, criticized the bill as a politically motivated measure intended to suppress conservative forces and launched a filibuster to delay the vote. As a result, the bill was passed on Friday. Enditem
