Vat Phou Festival to commemorate 25 years as UNESCO World Heritage Site

VIENTIANE, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- The annual Vat Phou Festival in southern Laos' Champasak province will take place from Jan. 31 to Feb. 2, marking the 25th anniversary of the Vat Phou temple's inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This year's celebration features a vibrant program of cultural and traditional activities highlighting the historical and spiritual significance of the centuries-old temple. Events include storytelling performances about Vat Phou, colorful parades, sports competitions, and musical shows by schoolchildren.

Visitors can explore a market fair showcasing One District, One Product items, featuring local handicrafts and agricultural goods.

The ruins of Vat Phou temple in Champasak are more than 1,000 years old, and the festival is held to revere the temple ruins and allow people to marvel at its history and the ancient culture it represents.

The Vat Phou temple complex was declared a World Heritage Site in 2001.

With a rich blend of cultural exhibitions, traditional performances, sports competitions, and religious ceremonies, the festival is set to be a must-visit event, offering both locals and international visitors a unique insight into the beauty and traditions of Laos. Enditem
