LONDON, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced on Monday plans to create a new National Police Service (NPS), marking what the Home Office described as "the largest reforms to policing since the police service was founded 200 years ago."
Mahmood said the new body was designed to bring together talent, specialist skills and advanced technology under a single command structure.
A national police commissioner will also be appointed as the most senior police officer in the country to lead the new service.
The reforms were set out in the Police Reform White Paper, titled From local to national: a new model for policing, which was released on Monday.
Under the proposals, the National Police Service will become a single nationwide force responsible for the most complex and serious crimes, including terrorism, organised crime and large-scale fraud.
The NPS will consolidate capabilities currently spread across multiple organisations, including the National Crime Agency, Counter Terrorism Policing, Regional Organised Crime Units, police air support and National Roads Policing.
Other reforms outlined in the white paper include reducing the number of police forces across England and Wales, establishing local policing areas for each town, city or borough, and the nationwide rollout of live facial recognition technology and the use of artificial intelligence by each police force.
