BAGHDAD, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi security forces on Tuesday arrested a "dangerous" Islamic State (IS) militant wearing an explosive belt in the western province of Anbar, thwarting a suicide bombing attempt, according to official sources.
The Iraqi National Security Service said in a statement that the arrest was made based on precise intelligence and after "close monitoring and tracking of the terrorist's movements."
Major Ali al-Assafi from the provincial police command told Xinhua that the suspect was captured inside a restaurant. An explosives expert successfully defused his suicide belt without casualties, while army and police forces cordoned off the site.
The security situation in Iraq has improved since the defeat of the IS in 2017. However, IS remnants have sneaked into urban centers, deserts, and rugged areas, carrying out frequent guerrilla attacks against security forces and civilians. Enditem
