OUAGADOUGOU, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- The government of Burkina Faso has adopted a decree dissolving all political parties and groupings, along with a draft law repealing the legal framework governing their operations, financing and the status of the opposition leader, a senior official said Thursday.

Emile Zerbo, minister of state and minister of territorial administration and mobility, said that the decision was made during a Council of Ministers meeting and followed a comprehensive review of the country's partisan system.

The government said that the proliferation of political parties in recent years has contributed to divisions among citizens and weakened social cohesion. The dissolution, it said, is intended to preserve national unity, strengthen the coherence of government action, and pave the way for reforms to the political governance system.

The decree also stipulates that the assets of dissolved parties will be transferred to the state, Zerbo noted, adding that the related draft laws will be submitted to the transitional legislative assembly for approval as soon as possible. Enditem
