COLOMBO, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan authorities are intensifying efforts to curb human trafficking and foreign employment scams by launching targeted training for law enforcement and pursuing legal action against unauthorized recruiters.
The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) said it has initiated a series of awareness programs for police officers across the island, focusing on relevant laws and regulations, as well as investigative techniques tailored to identifying and dismantling employment-related fraud.
The decision follows a rise in reports of Sri Lankans being deceived by individuals claiming to offer overseas job opportunities, particularly through social media platforms. Victims are often lured into paying large sums of money or handing over personal documents and later discover that the promised employment does not exist.
Through equipping police officers, the SLBFE aims to ensure faster response to complaints and better protection for jobseekers.
At the same time, the Bureau has uncovered an alleged human trafficking operation linked to a Sri Lankan national residing overseas. The individual is accused of posting misleading video advertisements online, promising employment in Moldova. Several complaints have been filed by people who claim they were defrauded after making payments. Legal proceedings are underway against the suspect. Enditem
