MOSCOW, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- The situation between Iran and the United States is highly explosive, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview with Russia Today on Thursday.

"Right now, we are not imposing ourselves as mediators between Iran, Israel and the United States. In our contacts with them, we are simply discussing the developments," Lavrov said, noting that as Iran's close partner, Russia is closely monitoring the unfolding situation.

He said that Russia stands ready to contribute to the de-escalation of tensions and ensure compliance with existing agreements.

"There are far too many ticking time bombs waiting to be set off by a clumsy misstep. The Iranians and Israelis know that we are prepared to facilitate the implementation of any agreements that may be reached," Lavrov added.

Earlier, U.S.-based news outlet Axios reported that nuclear negotiations between Washington and Tehran will take place in Oman on Friday.

In late January, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that a "massive armada" was heading toward Iran, and hoped that Tehran would sit down at the negotiating table and strike a "fair and equitable" deal, which would entail a full renunciation of nuclear weapons.

Iran has reiterated that it has not sought nuclear weapons, while retaining the right to peaceful nuclear technology.

Five rounds of U.S.-Iran nuclear negotiations ended fruitlessly in 2025, due to Israel's military operations against Iran and U.S. military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Enditem
