Szijjarto said the project now qualifies both legally and practically as a nuclear power plant under construction according to IAEA criteria. He added that the Paks II project is expected to strengthen Hungary's long-term energy security and competitiveness.

According to the minister, the facility will represent one of the largest and most advanced nuclear construction projects currently underway in Europe.

He added that accelerating the project remain a priority in order to enhance Hungary's energy sovereignty and ensure a stable electricity supply.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi described it as an important step for Hungary and international nuclear cooperation. He said the Paks II project symbolizes determination and resilience in the face of multiple challenges, adding that its progress reflects Hungary's long-term commitment to nuclear energy as part of its economic and energy strategy.

The two new reactors will be built by Russia's Rosatom under a deal that was signed by the two governments in 2014. Enditem
