KABUL, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan government announced on Wednesday that it has signed contracts for the construction of five major power generation projects with a combined capacity of 845 MW, marking a significant step toward addressing the country's chronic energy shortages.
The agreements, signed with private companies, involve an investment of approximately 463 million U.S. dollars. Under the terms, solar power facilities with a total capacity of 330 megawatts will be developed across three provinces, while coal-fired power plants totaling 515 megawatts are planned in two provinces, the office of the deputy prime minister for economic affairs said in a statement.
According to the statement, the solar projects are expected to be completed within two years, while the coal-fired plants will take three years.
The initiative is part of broader Afghan government efforts to boost domestic energy production, reduce dependence on imported electricity, and support industrial and residential demand across the country. Enditem
