PHNOM PENH, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- The number of road fatalities in Cambodia dropped to 1,467 people in 2025, a decrease of 2.78 percent from 1,509 in the year before, said a National Police report on Tuesday.

Besides the death toll, the road traffic accidents injured 3,213 others last year, down 13.6 percent from 3,720 in the year earlier, the report said.

The Southeast Asian country recorded 2,345 cases of road crashes last year, also down 17.5 percent from 2,844 cases in the year before, it added.

Phan Rim, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, attributed the drop to the government's efforts to reduce road traffic accident rates.

"Traffic accidents averagely kill four persons per day in Cambodia," he told Xinhua.

Phan Rim said the main causes of road crashes included speeding, failing to adhere to traffic rules, not respecting the right of way, reckless overtaking, careless turning, driving under the influence of alcohol, and drowsy driving.

Road accidents are the leading cause of deaths and injuries in Cambodia, costing the country about 466 million U.S. dollars a year, according to a report jointly conducted by the United Nations Development Program in Cambodia and the National Road Safety Committee. Enditem
