BEIRUT, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Lebanon has been warned that any involvement by Hezbollah in a potential confrontation between the United States and Iran could trigger Israeli strikes on critical infrastructure in Lebanon, Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji said on Tuesday.
In a post on social media platform X, Rajji said that Lebanese authorities were informed that Israel may target infrastructure sites if Hezbollah gets involved in a broader U.S.-Iran conflict.
He said the Lebanese government is pursuing diplomatic and political efforts to prevent the country from being dragged into a regional war.
Rajji's remarks come amid mounting regional tensions between Washington and Tehran. In recent weeks, the United States has reinforced its military posture in the Middle East, while Iranian officials have warned that any attack on Iran would ignite a wider confrontation across the region.
Lebanon, still recovering from the devastating cross-border war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2024, fears that a U.S.-Iran war could once again turn its territory into a battleground.
Despite a ceasefire agreement between Hezbollah and Israel that took effect on Nov. 27, 2024, the Israeli army continues to carry out occasional strikes in Lebanon, claiming they are aimed at removing Hezbollah "threats." Israeli forces have also maintained a presence at five key positions along the Lebanese border after the deadline for their full withdrawal expired on Feb. 18 last year. Enditem
