PARIS, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday accepted the resignation of the Louvre Museum's Director Laurence des Cars, according to a statement released by the Elysee Palace.

According to the statement, Macron accepted her resignation as "an act of responsibility" when the world's largest museum needs both "calm and a strong new impetus to successfully complete major security and modernization projects."

The Louvre has faced mounting challenges in recent months. Last October, four suspects stole jewels worth an estimated 88 million euros (about 103 million U.S. dollars). In late November, a water leak damaged hundreds of books in the museum's Egyptology library. In addition, rolling strikes have also led to regular closures of the museum. Enditem
