MOGADISHU, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Somali security forces backed by international partners killed 23 al-Shabaab militants after conducting operations near Mahas district in central Somalia, officials said Wednesday.
The National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) said in a statement issued in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, that the operations that were conducted in regions under Hirshabelle State targeted militants who were planning to carry out terror activities.
"The operations were preemptive measures, following intelligence reports of the group's activities in those areas. The joint forces also destroyed a terrorist base in the Moqokori district in the Hiran region," NISA said.
This operation comes as security forces strengthened operations against militants during the holy month of Ramadan. Enditem
