WASHINGTON, March 6 (Xinhua) -- Five U.S. radar sites have been identified by CNN as having been struck by Iran or its allies since the United States and Israel launched joint military attacks on Iran a week ago, the media outlet reported Friday.
A satellite image taken on Sunday shows smoke rising from a radar site near the Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, where dozens of U.S. warplanes are stationed, said the report, noting that a tent previously used to shelter a radar system for a nearby Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery was badly charred and debris was scattered around it at the site.
It is one of five radar sites identified as having been struck by Iran or its allies, said the report.
Four of the sites hosted radars for THAAD batteries used to engage and destroy ballistic missiles as they fly toward their targets, according to the report.
THAAD is a U.S.-made high-end missile interceptor system. The radars cost just shy of half a billion U.S. dollars each, said the report, citing a 2025 Missile Defense Agency budget. Enditem
