TEHRAN, March 10 (Xinhua) -- Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty, spoke Tuesday about the latest developments in West Asia, emphasizing both security concerns and diplomatic efforts.

In a phone call, Araghchi highlighted Iran's readiness to exercise its "legitimate right to self-defense" and deliver a "harsh" response to the U.S. and Israeli "aggressions and crimes," according to a statement from Iran's Foreign Ministry. He said Iranian strikes on U.S. bases and assets in the region fall within the country's right to defend itself and counter attacks.

Araghchi also said Iran seeks to maintain "friendly and brotherly" relations with regional countries and promote cooperation to ensure stability and security without foreign interference.

Abdelatty expressed concern over the escalation of tensions and underscored Egypt's diplomatic efforts to reduce regional hostilities, the Iranian statement said.

The exchange comes amid the ongoing conflict that began Feb. 28, when Israel and the United States launched joint strikes on Tehran and other Iranian cities, killing former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, senior military commanders, and civilians. Iran has retaliated with missile and drone attacks targeting Israeli and U.S. assets across the Middle East. Enditem
