COLOMBO, April 16 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's food safety authorities have intensified enforcement efforts following the festive season, taking legal action against more than 400 traders after uncovering widespread violations during a recent nationwide inspection drive.

The Public Health Inspectors' Union (PHIU) said Tuesday that non-compliance detected was significant, even by seasonal standards. Officials noted that it is a recurring pattern of traders to lower hygiene standards during peak demand periods.

According to PHIU Secretary Chamil Muthukuda, inspections are routinely stepped up ahead of major holidays due to a consistent surge in food safety violations. Between April 1 and April 12, inspectors carried out nearly 2,000 raids covering more than 12,000 across the island.

Authorities reported that a substantial number of establishments were found selling food under unsanitary conditions, while others were distributing expired or improperly stored items that could pose health risks to the public.

Muthukuda said inspections will continue in the coming weeks, with similar operations planned ahead of the Vesak and Poson festivals, alongside unannounced spot checks. Authorities warned that legal action will be pursued consistently against violators in an effort to curb repeat offenses and improve overall compliance within the food retail sector. Enditem
