BANGKOK, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Thailand recorded a significant decline in road accidents, injuries, and fatalities across the Southeast Asian country during the seven-day Songkran festival road safety campaign, official data showed on Friday.
According to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, 1,242 road crashes were reported over the past week, resulting in 1,200 injuries and 242 deaths, with the traditional Thai New Year holiday falling on April 13-15.
Between April 10 and 16, road accidents dropped 35.59 percent compared to the same period last year, while injuries and deaths also decreased 37.53 percent and 9.70 percent, respectively, said the department's director-general, Theerapat Kachamat.
Speeding was the leading cause of traffic incidents, accounting for 40.5 percent of the total, followed by drunk driving and cutting in front of other vehicles, with motorcycles being the most accident-prone vehicles, Theerapat told a news conference. Enditem
