ISLAMABAD, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday called for stronger labor protections and enhanced skills development, as the country marked International Labor Day.
In separate messages, both leaders paid tribute to workers in Pakistan and around the world, acknowledging their contributions to national development and economic progress.
Zardari said the day commemorates the historic struggle of workers who sacrificed their lives for fundamental rights, including fair wages and reasonable working hours.
The president reiterated Pakistan's commitment to international labor standards, including fair wages, social protection, and elimination of forced and child labor, and stressed the need for safe working conditions and equal opportunities.
Sharif highlighted the role of overseas Pakistanis in supporting the economy through remittances and said the government is advancing skill development under the National Skills Development Policy, with a focus on training, certification and global standards.
The prime minister also called for collective efforts by governments and stakeholders to safeguard workers' rights and dignity. Enditem
