LUSAKA, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Over 8.7 million Zambians are eligible to vote in this year's general elections, the country's electoral body said Monday.
Announcing the final certified register of voters following a mass voter registration exercise conducted between October and November last year, the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) said that about 8,786,300 people are fully registered to take part in the August polls.
Brown Kasaro, the ECZ chief electoral officer, told reporters in Lusaka, the country's capital, that about 4,066,423 of the registered voters are young people.
Out of the total number, 4,665,431 are females, representing 53.1 percent, while 4,120,869 are males, representing 46.9 percent, he added.
The officer noted that the certified register reflects the 226 constituencies following the conclusion of a delimitation exercise, which increased the number of constituencies from 156 to 226.
Zambians will head to the polling stations on August 13 to elect a president, members of parliament and councilors. Enditem
