MENENG, Nauru, May 15 (Xinhua) -- A ceremony marking the start of pile foundation work for the China-aided sports center project was held Friday in Nauru.

"We are very happy that the government and the people of China are helping Nauru realize our dream," Nauru's Minister for Community and Youth Charmaine Scotty said, adding that the project was "tremendous" for Nauru.

She said the project would play an important role in Nauru's preparations for the 2028 Micronesian Games, which the country will host for the first time.

"We will have all the Pacific coming to Nauru, and they will see the very good work of China and the friendship between Nauru and China in building this dream," she said.

Speaking at an event to celebrate the 58th Anniversary of Constitution Day later on Friday, Nauruan President David Adeang said the start of construction marked "a major milestone" for the country as Nauru prepares to host the Micronesian Games.

"This project is not only about sports infrastructure but also about investing in our people, promoting health and well-being, encouraging youth participation in sports, and bringing our nation together through unity, discipline, and national pride," Adeang said. Enditem
