ISLAMABAD -- The Pakistani government on Thursday reaffirmed its firm commitment to the one-China principle, describing Taiwan as an "integral and inalienable" part of China and backing Beijing's position on the Taiwan region's participation in the World Health Assembly (WHA).

Speaking at a weekly media briefing in Islamabad, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said Pakistan's position on Taiwan remains "firm and steadfast."

MENENG, Nauru -- A ceremony marking the start of pile foundation work for the China-aided sports center project was held Friday in Nauru.

HONIARA -- Matthew Wale was elected as the Solomon Islands' new prime minister by members of parliament on Friday, Governor General of the Solomon Islands David Tiva Kapu announced.

With former Deputy Prime Minister Manasseh Maelanga withdrawing from the race just before the session began, opposition leader Wale won a 26-to-22 vote in the 50-seat parliament to defeat former Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade Peter Shanel Agovaka.
