KABUL, May 18 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan government wants the U.S. to release Mohammad Rahim, an Afghan citizen who has been held in the U.S.-run detention center Guantanamo Bay for nearly two decades, the government's spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said.
"Mohammad Rahim is a longtime prisoner held in Guantanamo, while allegations against him have not been proved; therefore, he should be released and return to his family," local media outlet Tolonews quoted Mujahid as saying on Sunday night.
Mujahid also confirmed talks with the U.S. on Rahim's release, saying, "We have talks in this regard and demand his release." He did not provide more details.
Mohammad Rahim was arrested in 2007 and transferred to Guantanamo Bay detention center in 2008 on charges of facilitating al-Qaeda in the fight against U.S.-led troops in Afghanistan, which withdrew in August 2021. Enditem
