WASHINGTON, May 18 (Xinhua) -- The White House thinks an updated offer from Iran is insufficient for a peace deal as U.S. President Donald Trump weighs resuming military strikes, U.S. online media Axios reported Monday, citing a senior U.S. official.

Iran updated its response to a U.S. plan on Sunday night via Pakistan, but has only "token improvements" on the last version, said the report.

Trump is expected to convene his top national security team at the White House on Tuesday to discuss military options.

On Sunday, Trump warned on Truth Social that "the clock is ticking" for Iran, threatening again that the country would be left with nothing if its leadership failed to act quickly.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Monday that it is not correct to chant slogans against holding negotiations. "We negotiate with dignity and will never back down," according to a statement published on the website of his office. Enditem
