TOKYO, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Temperatures jumped across vast areas of Japan on Monday, topping 35 degrees Celsius for the first time this year, marking the third earliest "extremely hot day" on record, according to the weather agency.

Both Hita in southwestern Japan's Oita Prefecture and Toyooka in Hyogo Prefecture in the west reported 35.3 degrees Celsius, the highest this year, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said.

Meanwhile, a temperature of 34.6 degrees Celsius was observed in Miyazu, Kyoto Prefecture.

The JMA warned that the heat is expected to continue on Tuesday and urged caution against heat-related illnesses.

An "extremely hot day" in Japan refers to days when temperatures reach or exceed 35 degrees Celsius. The only years that witnessed an earlier onset of such extreme heat were 1993 on May 13 and 2023 on May 17. Enditem
