HANOI, May 19 (Xinhua) -- The expansion project of the international passenger terminal at Da Nang International Airport in central Vietnam kicked off on Tuesday, local media Tuoi Tre reported.

The project in Da Nang city involves a total investment of nearly 1.5 trillion Vietnamese dong (approximately 59.68 million U.S. dollars), the report added.

Covering around 3,600 square meters, the expansion will raise the terminal's total floor area to 21,000 square meters. The number of check-in counters will increase from 54 to 85, while the number of jet bridge boarding gates will rise from four to seven, according to the report.

Featuring a modern and eco-friendly design, the expansion project is set to greatly improve passenger experience.

Upon completion and operation, the upgraded terminal is expected to handle 6 million passengers annually between 2026 and 2030, local newspaper Da Nang News noted.

Originally opened in 2017, the terminal boasted a passenger throughput of over 7.1 million in 2019, surpassing its annual designed capacity of 4 million. It recorded 6.18 million passengers in 2024 and 6.81 million in 2025, remaining in high operational load, Tuoi Tre added. Enditem
