WELLINGTON, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Air New Zealand will launch three new non-stop international routes from Christchurch to Singapore, Tokyo and Perth from late October to strengthen connectivity and economic growth on the country's South Island.

The new services mark a significant expansion of international flying from Christchurch, the largest city on the South Island, enabled by the return to service of Boeing 787 aircraft after global engine maintenance disruptions and the addition of new aircraft, the national carrier said on Wednesday.

The Christchurch-Singapore service will begin on Oct. 28, followed by Tokyo on Nov. 28 and Perth on Nov. 30, subject to regulatory approval, it said, adding flights went on sale on Wednesday.

Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston said at the launch that stronger air links would support trade, tourism and export access, while "strengthening direct connections and opening up more opportunities for the South Island."

The announcement follows a memorandum of understanding between Air New Zealand and Christchurch Airport to align long-term planning and network development, with a focus on sustainable growth, improved passenger experience and stronger international connections.

Air New Zealand Chief Executive Nikhil Ravishankar said the routes would reconnect Christchurch directly to major global hubs and reshape visitor flows, while Christchurch Airport Chief Executive Justin Watson described the expansion as a "landmark moment" for the region's export and tourism sectors and wider economy.
