UNITED NATIONS, May 28 (Xinhua) -- The Group of Friends of Global Governance on Thursday called for upholding the authority of the United Nations and safeguarding the international rule of law at a meeting held at the UN headquarters in New York.

In a joint communique issued after the meeting, members of the group observed that the world has entered a period of turbulence and transformation, with the UN and the multilateral system facing mounting pressure and the global governance deficit continuing to widen.

All parties in the group welcomed the Global Governance Initiative proposed by China, noting that the initiative is fully consistent with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and aims to defend and practice multilateralism while strengthening the central role of the UN in international affairs.

The group members reached broad consensus on how to reform and improve the global governance system, calling on the international community to take the following actions to jointly address global challenges.

All members called on the international community to uphold the authority of the UN, advocated for firmly upholding the international system with the United Nations at its core, and stressed that the role of the UN can only be strengthened, not weakened. In particular, unilateral acts or politicized and selective means must be avoided.

Noting the need to defend the international rule of law, all members advocated for upholding multilateralism based on international law, and the basic norms of international relations based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

All members called for strengthening solidarity and cooperation, deepening cooperation between the UN and relevant regional organizations, and jointly addressing urgent and emerging global challenges, such as peace and security, sustainable development, artificial intelligence governance, and the adverse impacts of climate change.

Calling on the international community to improve global governance, all members advocated for urging the UN to better adapt to changes in the international situation, enhance the voice and representation of Global South countries, and better reflect the legitimate aspirations of developing countries.

They also called on the international community to address the challenges, constraints and needs faced by developing countries, in particular those in special situations, African countries, least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island developing states, including the impact of unilateral coercive measures.

The group members agreed to strengthen dialogue and coordination on issues related to global governance, expressed appreciation to the Chinese side for its efforts in hosting this meeting, and looked forward to enhancing solidarity and cooperation to build a more just and equitable global governance system.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, attended the meeting and delivered remarks. Representatives from more than 60 countries, including Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Cuba, Kyrgyzstan, Zimbabwe, Kazakhstan and Cambodia, attended the meeting. Enditem
