MADRID, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Inigo Perez confirmed he is stepping down as coach of Rayo Vallecano on Friday, just two days after his side lost the Conference League final 1-0 against Crystal Palace.

The 38-year-old, who had previously been assistant to Andoni Iraola at the club, took over the first team in February 2024 with Rayo in danger of relegation.

"I truly appreciate that they believed in me when I had no experience as a coach," said Inigo to the press.

The coach admitted he had started his term with doubts as he was "worried about repaying the debt to our fans," and that he and his players had achieved "important milestones."

"Despite being humble, we've achieved milestones. I'll miss everything that happens here," added Inigo.

The coach is expected to be named as the replacement for Marcelino Garcia Toral at Villarreal in the near future. Enditem
